TAE Resources – Good, Better, Best.

On Target Work Skills has been continuously improving TAE training and assessment resources for the past few years. I have been a TAE Trainer for many years, and based on my experience, I have had the opportunity to make my good resources better. My TAE resources for 2021 will soon be released, and they are going to be the best.

Sequence of topics

My resources for the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification have been segmented into five topics or learning blocks.

It is common for RTOs to use resources that only have four topics. And the usual TAE40116 program sequence is DES > LLN > DEL > ASS. As a TAE Trainer, I was working for a TAFE that decided to cover LLN first. This was a disaster.

My resources follow a sequence of VET > ASS > DES > DEL > LLN. And this overcomes the many problems that arise when the usual sequence is followed by RTOs.

The VET Framework

The VET Framework topic covers the TAEDES402 Use training packages and accredited courses to meet client needs unit. This is the obvious starting point because it helps to explain:

  • What is VET?
  • What are the key features of the Australian VET system?
  • What is competency-based training and assessment?
  • What are training packages and accredited courses?
  • How to use the training.gov.au website?

Learn about assessment before learning about training

From the perspective of a trainer working for an RTO, it is logical to cover the topic of assessment before training. Training must provide a pathway towards assessment. Therefore, we must know what the assessment is before we design and deliver the training. I always develop the assessment instruments before developing the training resources.

Also, from my experience as a TAE Trainer, the TAE Student does not really understand competency standards until they have completed the ASS cluster of units. I have found that TAE Students design better learning program and deliver better training sessions after they have learnt about competency-based assessment.

Many TAE Students find the ASS cluster the most difficult. By covering the four core ASS units first means you get the most challenging or ‘worst’ part of the program out of the way, and this allows the easier or ‘fun’ parts of the program to follow. This allows the TAE40116 program to end on a high, rather than a low.

Why cover the TAELLN411 unit last?

The TAELLN411 unit requires a TAE Student to address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills. To adequately do this, it is best for the TAE Student to already have learnt how to deliver training and assess competence. Once they know the basics, then they can address LLN skill gaps as they perform their role as a trainer or assessor.

My approach ensure compliance with the intent of the TAELLN411 unit and its assessment requirements.

Selection of elective unit

Some RTO have selected the BSBCMM401 Make a presentation as the elective unit. This is not done to add value to the TAE Student’s learning. Instead, it is done because it is integrated with the TAEDEL401 Plan, organise and deliver group based learning unit. This means no extra cost for the RTO to deliver the elective unit, and this saving keeps the cost of enrolment down.

My approach is a little different. My resources recommend selecting the TAEDEL301 Provide work skill instruction as the elective unit. This not only keep the costs for the RTO to a minimum so that it can offer competative enrolment fees, but it adds value to the learning experience for the TAE Student.

I have integrated TAEDEL402 Plan, organise and facilitate learning in the workplace and TAEDEL301 Provide work skill instruction units. This combination of units makes sense for the TAE Students because the TAEDEL301 unit gives a practical context when covering the TAEDEL402 unit.

Setting a scenario

For several years, I have incorporated a scenario to form the basis of several assessment tasks. The one scenario is used for learning and assessing:

  • How to use a training package to meet client needs
  • How to design a competency-based learning program
  • How to design and develop assessment tools, including an RPL assessment tool
  • How to assess competence, including conducting an RPL assessment
  • How to address adult LLN skills

On the 19th of October 2020, Version 7.0 of the BSB Business Service Training Package was released. I have used this as an opportunity to update the scenario, and the result is fantastic. The new scenario is based on the BSB20120 Certificate II in Workplace Skills qualification.

My TAE resources for 2021 will soon be released, and one of the great features is this scenario. All assessment tasks have been updated and enhanced. Detailed assessment matrices are available to give you confidence that my TAE resources comply with the requirements specified by each TAE unit.

You can implement my TAE resources by themselves, or you use them in conjunction with your current resources. You may find that my TAE resources could fix problems you have in the way you are currently delivering the TAE40116 qualification.
