How to develop an RPL Assessment Kit

An RTO must offer recognition of prior learning (RPL) to all student at the time of their enrollment. Often the RTO will develop an RPL Kit to guide the RPL process. This RPL Kit needs to provide instructions to the assessor and to the RPL applicant. Some RTOs may develop one RPL Kit with two parts: information for the assessor and information for the RPL applicant. Other RTOs may develop two documents: RPL Kit for the assessor and RPL Kit for the applicant. My preference is the two-document approach. What should each document cover?

An RPL Kit for the assessor should include:

  • Title page with RTO contact details
  • Contents page
  • Overview of the RPL process
  • Answers to questions used to gather knowledge evidence
  • Verification of third party reports
  • Competency matrix
  • Record of assessment result

An RPL Kit for the applicant should include:

  • Title page with RTO contact details
  • Contents page
  • Overview of the RPL process
  • Simple and plain English explanation of terms used
  • Answers to frequently asked questions
  • Self assessment
  • Examples of relevant evidence
  • Information about using third party reports to gather relevant evidence
  • List of evidence items
  • Application form
