Over the past few years I have published articles about the design and development of assessment tools. This was a compulsory requirement for people studying for their TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification.
The ‘design and development of assessment tools’ is no longer a core unit, and many people studying for their TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification will not be required to produce an assessment tool. However, the TAE40122 Student will still need to know what is an assessment tool and how to use it.
What is an assessment tool?
An assessment tool is a set of all the documents needed to conduct an assessment.
- Information about the assessment
- Instructions
- Instructions for the assessor
- Instructions for the candidate
- Assessment matrix (mapping against the unit of competency)
- Assessment instruments:
- Instrument to gather knowledge evidence
- Instrument or instruments to gather performance evidence
- Other documents may include:
- Assessment briefing checklist
- Assessment cover sheet
- Summary of assessment results.
How to use an assessment tool to assess competence?
The TAEASS412 Assess competence unit of competency requires the TAE Student to given a current and validated assessment tool if they haven’t designed and developed their own.
The assessment tool will be used to:
- Plan and prepare to conduct assessment
- Conduct an assessment briefing:
- Explain to candidates the assessment process and performance standards
- Confirm that candidates understand and agree to assessment process and are aware of their right to appeal
- Gather evidence and record assessment decisions
- Record assessment result and feedback.
How to validate an assessment tool?
The TAEASS413 Participate in assessment validation unit of competency requires the TAE Student to conduct:
- pre-assessment validation of 3 assessment tools before they are first used with candidates
- assessment validation of the same 3 assessment tools after they have been used to assess candidates.
The RTO delivering the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification must ensure that their TAE Student has access to these assessment tools.
In conclusion
People studying for their TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification will need to know what is an assessment tool and how to use it. Also, they need to understand the following:
- Principles of assessment
- Rules of evidence
- Assessment methods
- Assessment instruments
- Assessment tasks.
