Australia’s VET system is a competency-based system. This means training shall be based on Units of Competency that describe:
- Performance standards to perform work tasks
- Required knowledge to perform those work tasks
- Required skills to perform those work tasks.
Units of Competency all available from the training.gov.au website.

An RTO must deliver training that has been designed to help a person learn to perform work tasks to the standard that is expected in the workplace.
Learning about competency-based training design
The TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification has been designed for trainers and assessors to develop their capabilities to work within the VET system.
The TAEDES412 Design and develop plans for vocational training unit of competency covers the knowledge and skills required to design a competency-based training program.
